The measurement information is visible on a user screen with an interactive and user-friendly interface.
The REDS home screen
The home screen provides a direct and very clear overview of the actual status and balance of the engine(s). When significant deviations in engine balance are detected the user will be notified. The spider chart on home screen gives an indication of the location and the severity of the problem.
The information on the REDS home screen consists of three indicators: engine balance, thermal and mechanical health and rpm. The line bar gives an overview of the measurment data seen over the last hour.
- Spider chart: The engine’s cylinders are placed in a circle ordered by the moment of firing.
– When the engine operates in a balanced state all cylinders produce the same amount of power. This results in a symmetric spider chart.
– When deviations and engine imbalance are detected the spider chart becomes asymmetric, thereby clearly showing which cylinders contribute less power and what might be the cause.(please see picture 1.)
- The thermal health and mechanical health: are shown on the right side of the screen.
– Thermal health provides an indication of the efficiency of the engine. This has, amongst others, an effect on the operational costs.
– Mechanical health gives an indication of the overall condition of the engine. This is an indication of the wear within the engine.
- Line chart: shows the mechanical and thermal health and the engine’s rpm over the last hour.
When a deviation in engine balance is detected the user should switch to the detailed information screen, where more in-depth measurement information is to be found. By analyzing the data on the detailed information screen the user finds out what needs to be done to prevent component failure.
- Thermal health: Gives insight into the efficiency of the running engine.
- Mechanical health: Provides insight into the overall condition of the engine and indicates the wear in the engine.
- Spider chart: The power contribution shows if all cylinders produce the same amount of power. And of not which cylinder produces over or under power.
Cylinder specific indicators:
- Over power: If one cylinder produces over power this will be visible.
- Injection time: Gives detailed information about the fuel injection per cylinder.
- Injection condition: Provides information about the quality of the ignition per cylinder.
- Bearings and moving parts: Gives an indication on the status of the bearings and other moving parts inside the engine.
- The trend analysis gives information about the engine’s rotations per minute, thermal and mechanical health over time.
This screen shows an example of a 9 cylinder engine, operating efficiently and problem free. The second screen shows an engine that has a problem with the fuel injection on cylinder 1 or 6. This causes engine imbalance. Cylinder 1 and 6 contribute significantly less power. This is clearly shown in the spider chart, which is asymmetric with a red spot. The red spot indicates a problem with the injection timing on cylinder 1 or 6.
